19th Virtual Conference “The Future of Surgery”

Welcome to the Next-Generation Supermicrosurgery Consortium. Headed by Dr. Isao Koshima, the Consortium was established to advance and promote the field of supermicrosurgery, from both clinical and industrial perspectives. MIRAI Medtech is a funding support partner.Since 2020, the Consortium have been holding regularly scheduled Virtual Conferences in Japan. Experts in medicine and engineering are invited to discuss cutting-edge medical treatments and technologies with one another, by challenging the paradigm separating specialties. Our conferences typically host about fifty individuals. Participants are surgeons and clinicians, researchers, and device engineers. We also encourage and welcome participation by manufacturers and dealers of medical devices. During 2021, the Next-Generation Supermicrosurgery Consortium started English-based virtual events for international participants.

Summary:

We have invited three distinguished speakers to deliver the keynote lectures at the 19th Virtual Conference, ‘The Future of Surgery.’

First, Professor Mitsunaga Narushima from the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Mie University Hospital will deliver a lecture inspired by the limb regeneration abilities of newts, discussing the latest trends in research on lymphatic structures and limb regeneration, and outlining a future path forward.

Dr. Hisako Hara, M.D., Ph.D., Chief of Lymphatic and Reconstructive Surgery at JR Tokyo General Hospital, will give a lecture on the future of lymphedema treatment, tracing the journey of her challenges in addressing genital lymphedema.

Dr. Makoto Mihara, M.D., Ph.D., Director of Mukumi Clinic, Lymphedema Clinic Tokyo is collaborating with Sony Group Corporation to develop a robot that supports super-microsurgery. Currently, skilled plastic surgeons are operating this robot and have successfully anastomosed artificial blood vessels as small as 0.3 mm. Dr. Mihara will give a lecture on the future made possible by this robot, including reducing the burden on surgeons and shortening surgery times.

President Isao Koshima (Professor of the department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Hiroshima University Hospital) of this research society will present the latest findings and global trends related to the invited lecture.
After the lecture, there will be a lively online panel discussion with the speakers.
