22nd Virtual Conference “The Future of Surgery”
Welcome to the Next-Generation Supermicrosurgery Consortium. Headed by Dr. Isao Koshima, the Consortium was established to advance and promote the field of supermicrosurgery, from both clinical and industrial perspectives. MIRAI Medtech is a funding support partner.Since 2020, the Consortium have been holding regularly scheduled Virtual Conferences in Japan. Experts in medicine and engineering are invited to discuss cutting-edge medical treatments and technologies with one another, by challenging the paradigm separating specialties. Our conferences typically host about fifty individuals. Participants are surgeons and clinicians, researchers, and device engineers. We also encourage and welcome participation by manufacturers and dealers of medical devices. During 2021, the Next-Generation Supermicrosurgery Consortium started English-based virtual events for international participants.

Summary:
Lymphedema is an irreversible condition caused by damage to the lymphatic drainage pathways in the limbs due to cancer treatment surgeries, radiation therapy, or trauma, resulting in impaired lymph flow. Early intervention with conservative therapies such as compression therapy, lymphatic drainage, or lymphaticovenous anastomosis is critical to prevent severe progression. In advanced cases, however, significant damage to the subcutaneous tissues and lymphatic vessels can lead to a dramatic reduction in lymphatic drainage efficiency. This results in symptoms such as increased limb size, thickened skin, and, in some cases, elephantiasis—a condition where the affected limb becomes enlarged to resemble an elephant’s leg. For these severe cases, it is essential to restore both the physical appearance and the lymphatic drainage function. By minimally excising hypertrophic tissue and combining this with lymph node transplantation and compression therapy, it becomes possible to reverse the progression of advanced lymphedema. This lecture will introduce the speaker’s strategies and innovations in “Reshaping,” focusing on surgical and therapeutic approaches to treating lymphedema in its advanced stages.
President Isao Koshima (Professor of the department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Hiroshima University Hospital) of this research society will present the latest findings and global trends related to the invited lecture.
After the lecture, there will be a lively online panel discussion with the speakers.
